Mike spent 35 years as an aerospace structural engineer. He designed things that had to be precise because imprecision in aerospace has consequences that are not acceptable. When he retired and turned to woodworking, he brought the same mindset with him. His shop is the most precisely outfitted home woodworking space we’ve encountered – not in terms of equipment cost, but in terms of calibration rigor, measurement precision, and the standards to which every operation is held.

Every machine in Mike’s shop is calibrated on a quarterly schedule. The table saw blade is checked for alignment to the miter slots on the same day of every third month. The jointer tables are checked for coplanarity. The bandsaw guides are adjusted to within 0.003 inches of the blade. The drill press chuck is checked for runout. “An out-of-alignment machine produces out-of-specification work,” Mike says. “If my tolerances are consistent, my work is consistent. If my machines drift, my work drifts. I check the machines so I can trust what they tell me.”

The measuring tools in his shop would not look out of place in a metrology lab: a set of precision machinist’s squares (tested against a granite reference surface), a digital height gauge, a set of gauge blocks for setting blade height, and a dial indicator with a magnetic base for checking machine alignment. He uses these tools constantly – not just for machine calibration but for workpiece measurement during production. His tolerances in furniture joinery are within 0.005 inches, which is exceptional for hand-built furniture.

The furniture he makes reflects the precision: clean lines, tight-fitting joinery, a consistency across pieces that comes from the same source as precision manufacturing – controlled processes applied consistently. “I don’t make furniture the way an artist makes furniture,” he says. “I make furniture the way an engineer makes a part.
