I had back surgery in 2019. L4-L5, herniated disc, the whole situation. My surgeon told me that prolonged standing in one position – the kind of standing you do while handplaning or sawing at a workbench – was going to be a problem. My woodworking practice, which I’d been building for fifteen years, was suddenly in question.
I spent six months away from the shop. When I came back, I came back with a different bench. Or rather, no bench – a height-adjustable work surface built on a scissor-lift base I adapted from a commercial draft table. The surface can go from 28 inches (seated stool height) to 42 inches (elevated standing) in about twenty seconds with a foot pedal. I built a new top for it – 2-inch maple, dog holes, a simple face vise – and attached it to the lift mechanism with a bolted apron system that can be removed if I ever need to swap surfaces.
I stand at 36 inches for most work. I drop to 28 and use a stool for layout, fine fitting, and anything that requires me to be over the work looking down. I raise to 42 for planing – less torque on my lower back when I’m driving a plane forward. The three positions have changed how I approach every task in the shop.
My back is fine. My woodworking is better than it was before the surgery, partly because the height adjustability forced me to think about body position as part of technique.
