MDF is a controversial workbench material. It’s heavy, it’s not moisture-resistant, it dents, and the woodworking establishment has opinions about whether it’s a legitimate bench top. But for a first bench – or a dedicated assembly-and-finishing bench alongside a primary hardwood bench – MDF has genuine advantages that are worth understanding before you dismiss it.
First, flatness. A well-made MDF panel is flatter out of the bag than any solid-wood panel you could produce without a jointer, planer, and significant time. For an assembly bench where flatness is critical and you’re gluing up flat panels, MDF gives you a reference surface that’s hard to beat at the price point. Rob, who builds flat-pack furniture as a side business, uses a doubled-up 3/4-inch MDF top on his assembly bench and checks it for flatness quarterly with a long straightedge. In three years it hasn’t deviated more than 1/32 of an inch. He seals the top with three coats of shellac and one coat of paste wax and calls it done.
The denting problem is real but manageable. MDF dents under point loads – a mallet strike, a dropped chisel. Rob’s solution is a sacrificial 1/4-inch MDF sheet on top that he replaces about once a year when it gets too chewed up. The structural top underneath has never been touched. Total cost of the sacrificial top per year: about $12.
This is not the bench you build to use forever. It’s the bench you build to use while you’re saving money and skills for the bench you really want – or the bench you build to handle specific tasks that your primary bench isn’t ideal for.
