The one-car garage shop is a constraint that forces creativity. You have roughly 200 square feet – enough for a modest shop if you use every vertical inch and plan the floor plan ruthlessly. Kevin’s one-car garage shop in Seattle contains: a contractor table saw, a 6-inch jointer, a 13-inch planer, a bandsaw, a drill press, a workbench, a sharpening station, a finishing cabinet, a dedicated hand tool wall, a clamp rack, and lumber storage for up to 200 board feet. Nothing overlaps. Everything is accessible without moving anything else. On paper, it should be impossible.
The key is mobile bases under every machine. Every stationary tool in the shop can be moved in 30 seconds. Kevin works with one machine deployed at a time. The jointer unfolds from the wall, gets used, folds back. The bandsaw rolls out from its corner, cuts are made, it returns. The table saw is the exception – it lives in the center of the space permanently because it’s the most-used machine. Everything else is parked until needed.
The vertical organization above the machines is equally dense. Every inch of wall space above the mobile base parked position has storage: cleat walls, pegboard, magnetic knife strips (for chisels), shelving. The ceiling has overhead storage for lumber up to 8 feet and a lighting grid of eight LED shop lights that give even, shadow-free illumination across the full space. Kevin spent two years refining the layout through iteration – moving machines, measuring clearances, rebuilding storage until every square foot was earning its keep.
