The hardware problem starts small. A few bags of screws, a box of nails, some assorted bolts from past projects. The solution that scales: a fixed bin system with a consistent logic. Not bins sorted by project (those become orphaned the minute the project ends), not bins sorted by “things I use a lot” vs. “things I rarely use” (that logic requires constant re-sorting as your use patterns change). The system that works long-term is bins sorted by fastener type and then size: wood screws by length and head style, machine screws by thread and length, nails by gauge and length, bolts by thread and length, specialty hardware by category.
The bin system itself: stackable clear plastic bins in two sizes (small for screws, nails, and bolts; large for hardware like hinges, drawer slides, and pulls). Label the front of every bin with a label maker. Arrange bins alphabetically by category within each section. The alphabetical arrangement sounds pedantic – it isn’t. When you have 60 bins, alpha organization means any bin can be found in about 4 seconds without knowing exactly where you put it last time.
