Temperature control in the home shop is a problem that scales with your ambition. If you’re making rough boxes in a cold garage, temperature is a minor inconvenience. If you’re making furniture with tight-fitting joinery, a finish-quality spray setup, and humidity-sensitive hardwoods, temperature and humidity management become integral to the work itself. We surveyed readers across all climate zones and collected the most practical solutions for managing shop temperature without a full HVAC installation.

The most effective approach in the coldest climates (Minnesota, Vermont, Colorado, the Canadian provinces with large reader populations): a mini-split heat pump. Not cheap – typically $1,500-3,000 installed – but by far the most energy-efficient approach to shop heating and cooling. A mini-split can maintain a shop at 65°F in temperatures as low as -15°F, cools the shop in summer, and acts as a dehumidifier in humid months. Multiple readers have said the mini-split was the best single shop investment they’ve made.

For the budget-constrained cold-weather shops: the kerosene or propane torpedo heater for emergency warming, combined with a programmable electric baseboard heater that maintains the shop at 45°F continuously and is supplemented by the torpedo for session warmup. Not elegant, but effective and achievable for under $300. Warning: ventilation is critical with combustion heaters – carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, and fatal shop hazard. Never run a combustion heater in a sealed space without fresh air exchange.

For hot climate shops (Texas, Arizona, Florida): shade structures, ridge vents, and attic fans are more valuable than air conditioning for controlling heat. Most shop activities generate heat; cooling a space that is also generating heat is expensive. Moving air through the space with a ridge vent and intake vents on the floor is free after installation and dramatically reduces the effective temperature inside an outdoor-adjacent shop structure.
