The loud shop is a neighborhood problem, a family problem, and a health problem. Extended exposure to sounds above 85 decibels causes cumulative hearing damage. A standard router runs at about 90 decibels. A table saw runs between 90 and 100. A thickness planer can reach 103. If you’re running these tools without hearing protection, you’re losing hearing you won’t get back. And if you’re running them in a garage adjacent to your neighborhood, you may also be acquiring complaints you also won’t get back. Both problems have the same solution set.

At the source: sharp tooling is quieter tooling. A dull blade vibrates more and transmits more noise through the workpiece into the shop air. Keeping your blades, bits, and irons sharp is a noise reduction strategy as much as a quality strategy. Beyond that, vibration damping at machine mounting points reduces the structure-borne noise that transmits through your garage floor and walls into the neighborhood. Anti-vibration feet under every machine. Rubber-backed mats under every rolling machine base. The investment per machine is $20-40; the return in reduced transmitted noise is real and measurable.

At the structure: mass reduces sound transmission. More drywall on your garage walls, insulation in the wall cavities, weatherstripping on the garage door, a solid-core door between the shop and any adjacent interior space – all of these reduce the sound that leaves the shop. None of them eliminates noise at the source, which is the only approach that truly solves the problem for the people generating it (you).

The most effective personal protection: earmuffs rated NRR 30 or above for machine work. Earplugs alone (NRR 20-30) work but require correct insertion to achieve rated protection. The combination of both (double protection) for the loudest machines is what audiologists recommend, but most of our readers consider this excessive for shop use.
