There is a category of shop builder for whom a tool cabinet is not just a storage solution but a statement – a piece of furniture in its own right, built with the same attention to detail and materials as the furniture made on the workbench inside it. The tool cabinet as craft object is a tradition with deep roots, from the ornate apprentice-piece tool chests of the Victorian era to the elegant Japanese-influenced tool boxes of contemporary craftsmen. Building one is its own project, worth treating as seriously as any other.

The decision points: exterior material and finish, drawer configuration and dimensions, interior fitting for specific tools, and hardware. All four require knowing exactly which tools will live in the cabinet and how you want to interact with them. A cabinet built for chisels has different drawer depths than a cabinet built for planes. A cabinet built to display on an open wall in a finished shop has different exterior requirements than a cabinet that lives in a dusty corner.

Reader Julia spent eight months building her tool cabinet from quartersawn white oak – a material she chose because it responds beautifully to hand-plane surfaces and will develop a rich patina over decades of shop use. The cabinet has 12 drawers sized to specific tools: three shallow drawers for layout tools (1-inch depth), four medium drawers for chisels and gouges (2-inch depth), three deep drawers for planes (4-inch depth), and two full-height doors on the left side holding a full set of saws in a vertical rack behind the doors. The exterior joinery is all hand-cut. The drawer bottoms float in grooves. The hardware is solid brass, purchased from a specialty supplier in England.

The cabinet took 160 hours to build. Julia says it is, without question, the best thing she has ever made. It will outlast every tool inside it. Share your tool cabinet build – from a simple plywood box to a cabinet-level masterpiece.
