The garden shed conversion is the most common small shop origin story in our reader community. A standard 8×12 or 10×12 pressure-treated shed, purchased flat-pack from a big-box store and assembled over a weekend, becomes the nucleus of a proper woodworking practice through a series of upgrades: electrical service, insulation, better lighting, flooring, and a workbench. The full conversion can happen in stages over a year or two, or in one committed weekend push. Both approaches work.
Reader Kate documented her 10×12 shed conversion in a photo series that spanned nine months. Starting point: a standard cedar shed, no electrical, gravel floor, single double-pane window, and a door that opened inward and blocked half the useful floor space. First upgrade: electrical – a 60-amp subpanel fed by underground conduit from the house panel, with four 20-amp circuits inside (one for the table saw, one for the dust collector, one for the bench and lighting, one for a split for the heater). Month two, done by an electrician, cost about $900.
Second upgrade: floor. The gravel came out, a 4-inch concrete slab went in – poured by a concrete contractor over one day, cost about $800. Third upgrade: insulation and interior. R-13 in the walls, R-19 in the ceiling, OSB on the walls to serve as a base for French cleats. Total materials for insulation and OSB: about $600. Fourth upgrade: the door. A standard outswing door replaced the original inswing, returning the blocked floor area to use and adding weatherstripping that the original door lacked.
Nine months after she started, Kate had a properly equipped small shop with real electrical service, a solid floor, insulated walls, and a workbench that had been built last in the sequence – “so I had a real floor to set the legs on.” Total conversion cost: about $3,200.
