Apartment woodworking is the constraint that most people assume rules out woodworking entirely. No garage, no dedicated space, neighbors below and beside you, no place to put a table saw, no place to make the noise a table saw generates. And yet – more woodworkers than you’d expect maintain a productive practice in apartments, condos, and small urban living spaces. The toolkit is different. The process is different. The results are not.

The key enablers: hand tools make low noise and can be used on a kitchen table or a small folding bench. Modern hand-tool woodworking – influenced by Japanese hand-tool traditions and the hand-tool revival in American woodworking over the past two decades – produces furniture that competes with power tool work for quality and in many cases surpasses it for precision. A sharp chisel and a sharp hand plane don’t vibrate the floor or produce shrieking machine noise. They produce shavings and satisfying quiet sounds.

Reader Ana in a Chicago apartment builds furniture with a kit that fits entirely in a rolling kitchen cart: a set of Bailey-pattern bench planes (3, 4, 5, and 7), a set of chisels, marking tools, a Moxon vise that clamps to her kitchen island, and a collection of hand saws. She crosscuts with a rip-and-crosscut panel saw, rips with a rip saw, does joinery with a back saw. Her finishing is waterborne and low-odor. She works at the kitchen island with a drop cloth on the floor and shops cleanup at the end of every session. Her neighbors have never complained.

Her most recent project: a walnut side table with hand-cut mortise-and-tenon legs and a through-tenon stretcher, hand-planed to 150 grit and finished with water-based satin lacquer. Total time: 6 weekends of morning sessions. Total noise complaints: zero. Tell us about your apartment or small-space woodworking setup. This community gets it.
