How to Tune and Use a Card Scraper
The card scraper is the smaller sibling of the hand scraper – a thin piece of hardened spring steel about the size of an index card, used for final surface preparation in tight spots, for leveling inlay, and for smoothing veneer faces. Like the hand scraper, its effectiveness depends entirely on having the right edge preparation. A poorly prepared card scraper produces dust; a properly prepared one produces shavings and a surface ready for oil without sanding.
What’s Different About a Card Scraper
A card scraper is thinner and smaller than a cabinet scraper, held between the fingers and flexed slightly during use. It’s used for detail work: cleaning glue from joints, leveling inlay flush, smoothing the inside of curves, and any area where a full-size hand plane or cabinet scraper is too large to maneuver. The technique for using it is slightly different because of its size and how it’s held.
Preparing a Card Scraper
- File the four edges dead flat and square with a mill file
- Hone the flat faces near the edges on a fine stone
- Hone each edge on the stone to remove all file marks
- Lay the scraper flat on the bench edge and draw a burnisher firmly along each edge at 0 degrees to establish a flat, burnished edge
- Tilt the burnisher 3 to 5 degrees and draw it along each edge 2 to 3 times to turn the hook
Using the Card Scraper
Hold the scraper between both thumbs and index fingers, with the thumbs on the back face near the center. Apply thumb pressure to flex the scraper into a slight bow. Tilt the scraper toward you at 10 to 15 degrees. Push away from you across the wood surface. The hook should cut shavings. If you’re getting dust, re-prepare the edge or adjust the angle.
