How to Drill Perfectly Perpendicular Holes Without a Drill Press
Most woodworkers know they should drill perpendicular holes but few can do it consistently by hand. A hand drill used freehand almost always drifts off axis – especially in the plunge direction on the start and during the boring of deep holes. There are several simple techniques and jigs that solve this problem without requiring a drill press, making perpendicular hand-drilled holes achievable for any skill level.
Why Holes Drift
Hand-drilled holes drift for several reasons: the bit wanders before the point fully engages the wood, the drill body tilts as you look down from above rather than from the side, and the bit follows easier grain rather than the intended path in some species. Understanding the cause suggests the solution for each.
Method 1 – Drill Block Guide
The simplest and most accurate method: clamp a block of scrap wood to the workpiece with a perpendicular hole drilled through it at a drill press. The hole in the guide block acts as a bushing that guides the bit perpendicular to the surface. Insert the bit through the guide block hole and drill. The block transfers the perpendicular drilling to the workpiece below. Make several guide blocks with common hole sizes (1/4, 3/8, 1/2 inch) and hang them at the drill station.
Method 2 – Commercial Drill Guide
The Portalign, Wolfcraft, and similar drill guides clamp to the drill or hold the workpiece in a perpendicular fixture. These work reasonably well for common hole sizes. The Portalign style is the most versatile – it clamps to any standard drill and provides a reference platform that rests on the workpiece surface.
Method 3 – Use Reference Squares
Set a small machinist’s square or a try square beside the bit before drilling. Start the hole with a slower, steady entry while checking alignment against the square from the front and side. Stop and check before the point is fully engaged – a drifting bit can still be corrected at this stage. Once the hole is started correctly, the point tracks the path through the full depth.
Method 4 – The Mirror Trick
Set a small mirror beside the workpiece. The mirror reflects the drill body angle – if the drill appears perpendicular in the mirror’s reflection, it’s perpendicular to the surface. This works best for relatively shallow holes where you can check continuously during drilling.
Drilling Deep Holes Without Drift
For deep holes (more than 3 times the hole diameter), drift is especially problematic. Use a brad-point or twist bit as a pilot and drill in stages: 1/4 inch, then 1/2 inch, then the full diameter if using bits larger than the pilot. The pilot establishes the correct path and the larger bits follow it. For very deep holes, use a long auger bit in a brace for the greatest control.

Can I correct a hole that started crooked? If you catch the drift early (within the first 1/4 inch), you can sometimes correct by slowly angling the drill body while the point is engaged. For holes more than 1/4 inch deep, it’s better to fill the hole and start over – trying to correct an established crooked hole produces an oval, not a round hole.
Does wood species affect drill drift? Yes – ring-porous species (oak, ash) drill straighter than diffuse-porous species (maple, cherry) because the annual ring structure tends to guide the bit. Softwoods like pine drill least predictably because the bit follows the alternating hard and soft grain bands.
