How to Build a Mini Spray Booth in a Small Shop

Spraying finish is faster and more professional-looking than brushing, but it requires containing the overspray and evacuating the solvent fumes safely. In a small shop, a dedicated full-size spray booth isn’t possible. But a mini spray booth – a simple structure that contains overspray during spray sessions and collapses for storage when not in use – makes HVLP spraying practical even in a one-car garage. This guide covers a collapsible booth design that sets up in 10 minutes and stores flat against the wall.

Design Overview

The booth is a three-sided enclosure of 1-inch PVC pipe and plastic sheeting. Four corner uprights support a top frame and two side frames. Clear plastic sheeting (4-mil poly) clips to the frames on three sides and the top, open at the front for access. A box fan in the back panel (the panel farthest from you when spraying) exhausts through a vent to the exterior or through a filter to the shop. The whole structure breaks down into PVC pipe sections and rolled poly sheeting that store in a 6-inch by 6-foot bundle.

Building the Frame

Cut 1-inch PVC pipe into: four uprights at 7 feet, four top rails at 4 feet, two side rails at 4 feet, and four back frame pieces at 4 feet. Use 90-degree elbows and T-fittings to assemble a rectangular box frame with an open front. Don’t glue the joints – you want the frame to disassemble. Test-assemble before cutting the sheeting.

Adding the Sheeting

Cut 4-mil poly sheeting to cover the top, two sides, and back. Use spring clamps or binder clips to attach the sheeting to the frame – this allows easy replacement when the sheeting gets overspray buildup. The sheeting on the back panel needs a cutout for the box fan. Cut a hole slightly smaller than the fan opening, press the fan through from the outside, and secure it with duct tape.

Exhaust Options

If you have exterior access (a window, a garage door crack, or a through-wall vent), duct the fan to the exterior. This is the safest option for solvent-based finishes. For water-based finishes only, a activated-carbon filter on the back panel can recirculate air back into the shop without an exterior duct – but this is not safe for lacquers, solvent-based primers, or oil-based finishes.

Lighting the Booth

A battery-powered LED work light set inside the booth (not plugged in to avoid spark ignition risk in a solvent environment) provides good visibility of the workpiece during spraying. Position it at 45 degrees to the work surface so runs and holidays show clearly as you spray.

FAQ

Can I spray lacquer in this booth?

Only if you have exterior exhaust and an explosion-proof fan motor. Most standard box fans have motors that can produce sparks – these fans are not safe near solvent vapors. Use an explosion-proof or sealed-motor fan, or exhaust with a duct fan mounted outside the vapor zone.

How do I clean overspray off the booth walls?

For plastic sheeting, wipe with a rag dampened in the appropriate solvent for the finish used. When the buildup becomes too thick, replace the sheeting – it’s cheap enough that fresh sheeting is the practical solution over heavy cleaning.
