How to Apply Spray Finish with an HVLP Gun

HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spraying produces professional-quality finishes without the overspray, wasted material, and hazardous bounce-back of conventional high-pressure spraying. An HVLP gun connected to a turbine unit or a compressor delivers finish in a soft, controllable fan that atomizes the material finely enough to wet out surfaces completely but slowly enough that you can see and correct any issues before they dry. This guide covers setup, material preparation, spraying technique, and the most common problems with their fixes.

HVLP Equipment

HVLP guns come in two types: turbine-fed (the gun connects to a dedicated turbine unit that supplies warm, high-volume air) and compressor-fed (the gun connects to a standard air compressor through a regulator). Turbine systems heat the air slightly, which improves atomization and speeds flash time. Compressor-fed HVLP guns work with any air supply but require a regulator to maintain consistent low pressure at the gun. For a home shop, a turbine-based HVLP system in the $200 to $600 range provides excellent results with water-based and light solvent-based finishes.

Preparing the Material

Most spray finishes need to be thinned slightly for HVLP application – the manufacturer’s viscosity recommendation is for brushing, not spraying. For water-based finishes, thin 10 to 15 percent with water. For solvent-based finishes, use the recommended solvent at 10 to 20 percent. Test viscosity with a viscosity cup – most HVLP systems work best with finishes that drain from the cup in 20 to 25 seconds. Strain the finish through a mesh paint strainer before loading the gun to remove any particles that would clog the nozzle.

Setting Up the Gun

Adjust the fan pattern, material flow, and air pressure at the gun for the material and application. A vertical fan pattern for edges and narrow surfaces; a wide horizontal fan for large flat panels. Material flow controls how much finish comes out with each trigger pull – start low and increase until you achieve a wet coat without runs. Test on a piece of cardboard before spraying any project material.

Spraying Technique

Hold the gun 6 to 8 inches from the surface. Move at a steady pace, keeping the gun parallel to the surface (not arcing). Each pass overlaps the previous by 50 percent. Trigger on before the pass begins and trigger off after it ends – this prevents buildup at the start and end of each stroke. Apply multiple thin coats rather than one heavy coat. A thin coat that flashes between passes builds better than a thick wet coat that sags before it cures.

Common Problems

  • Orange peel texture: finish is too thick, air pressure is too low, or the gun is too far from the surface. Thin the material slightly and move the gun closer.
  • Runs: too much material, moving too slowly, or gun too close. Increase speed, reduce material flow, or move the gun slightly farther away.
  • Dry spray (rough, powdery texture): finish is too thin, gun is too far away, or ambient temperature is too high causing the material to partially dry before hitting the surface. Thicken slightly, move closer, or spray in cooler conditions.

Can I spray oil-based lacquer with an HVLP gun?

Yes, but only with proper ventilation and a non-sparking environment. Lacquer thinner is highly flammable; any spark from a motor or electrical fixture can ignite the vapor. Use an explosion-proof fan for exhaust, ensure the area is well-ventilated before spraying, and don’t use an HVLP turbine with any sparking or brush-type motor.

How do I clean the HVLP gun after use?

Immediately after use, spray the appropriate solvent (water for water-based products, lacquer thinner for solvent-based) through the gun until the spray runs clear. Disassemble the nozzle and needle, soak in solvent, and dry. A clean gun after every session prevents dried finish from clogging the nozzle and ruining future jobs.
