How to Maintain a Healthy Air Quality Routine in Your Workshop
Wood dust is classified as a known human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer – hardwood dust in particular is associated with nasal cavity cancer with prolonged occupational exposure. For a home woodworker, the exposure levels are lower than for an industrial worker, but the cumulative effect over years of weekend shop time is real and worth managing seriously. Source Capture – First Priority
Capture dust before it enters the air. A dust collector connected to each stationary machine, plus a dust extractor connected to each portable power tool, removes 85 to 99 percent of dust before it becomes airborne. This is far more effective per dollar than any filtration or respiratory protection after the fact. A $300 dust extractor paired with a $50 HEPA bag provides better dust management than a $500 ceiling-mounted air filtration unit for the same amount of work.
Ambient Filtration – Second Line
Even with good source capture, fine particles escape into the shop air. A ceiling-mounted ambient air filtration system (AFS) running continuously during shop time and for 60 minutes after captures most of the residual fine particles. Specify a HEPA-rated or 0.3-micron filter – standard 1-micron filters pass the smallest and most dangerous particles. Run the AFS at a higher speed setting during machining and a lower setting for ambient filtration between operations.
Respiratory Protection – Personal Last Line
Wear a P100-rated respirator for all dusty operations: sawing, sanding, routing, planing. Not an N95 dust mask – a fitted half-face respirator with P100 cartridges.
