Workflow in the shop isn’t just about where machines are positioned. It’s about the sequence of decisions and actions that take raw material to finished piece, and how efficiently the shop environment supports that sequence. The best workflow hacks reduce friction – the small resistances that individually seem minor but collectively consume a significant portion of your shop time. Mill all parts before cutting any joinery. This sounds basic, but many hobbyist builders cut their first mortise before they’ve finished milling. If the wood moves after you cut the mortise – and wood moves after milling – your joint is wrong. Mill everything, let it acclimate overnight, check for movement, then cut joinery. Label every part with a cabinetmaker’s triangle after mill. The triangle marks face side, face edge, and the relative position of parts in the assembly. Spend two minutes labeling everything; save twenty minutes of confusion during glue-up. Cut all parts slightly long, then sneak up on final dimension. Final crosscutting is faster and more accurate than correcting an undersize part. Always leave a little. Do a dry assembly before every glue-up, no exceptions. You will find the problem during dry assembly. You will not enjoy finding it during glue-up. Mark the glue-up sequence before you open the glue. Which joint gets glue first? Which second? Once you start, you’re racing the open time. Know the sequence before you need it.
