There is no quicker, cheaper, or more transformative shop upgrade than better lighting. This statement is easy to agree with and hard to act on, because most of us have adapted to whatever lighting our shop came with and stopped noticing how bad it is. Until we fix it, and then we can’t imagine working in the old light again.
Dan’s garage shop had two incandescent bulbs in ceiling fixtures when he moved in. The fixtures were over 20 years old, the bulbs were 60 watts each, and the light they produced was amber, dim, and cast shadows in the exact corners where he most needed to see what he was doing. He adapted. He added a clip-on work light to the left side of his workbench and called it good enough. He assumed that this was just how shop lighting was.
Last fall, on a friend’s advice, he installed eight 4-foot LED shop lights – the kind that link end-to-end, connect with a single outlet, and produce 5000 lumens each at a color temperature of 5000K (daylight). Total cost for eight fixtures: $180. Installation: a Saturday afternoon. The result was so dramatic that he took before and after photos and said the photos “don’t fully capture how different it is.” No shadows on the workbench. True color rendering for finishing work. The ability to see layout lines without a work light at every task position.
His specific recommendation: go higher kelvin (5000-6500K) for woodworking, not the warmer 3000K that’s typically used in living spaces. The daylight spectrum shows figure in wood, shows finish colors accurately, and makes layout lines pop against the wood surface. Warm light is pleasant. Daylight light is functional.
