Build a Measuring Tool Organizer for the Wall
Measuring tools – rules, folding rules, digital calipers, marking gauges, dividers, and angle finders – are small, precise, and easy to misplace. Most of them are also easy to damage: calipers with a chip on the jaw, a marking gauge with a bent pin, a steel rule with a bent end – any of these defeats the purpose of the tool. A wall-mounted measuring tool organizer protects these tools while keeping them accessible, grouped by function, and visible at a glance. This project builds a compact organizer for a 12-by-24-inch wall section.

Organizing by Type
Group measuring tools into categories: rules and straight edges, gauges (marking, mortise, cutting), calipers and dividers, angle tools (squares, bevel gauges, protractors), and specialty tools. Each category gets its own section of the organizer. This grouping means when you need to measure something, you go to the measuring section; when you need to mark something, you go to the gauge section. The categories are more useful than organizing by size or by frequency of use.
Building the Rule Section
Steel rules and folding rules hang flat on horizontal wooden dowels. Drill 1/2-inch holes through the shelf at 2-inch intervals and insert dowels that project 3 inches forward from the shelf face. Rules hang with one end over a dowel. Each dowel holds two rules (one on each side) at slightly different heights. The dowel position for each rule is labeled underneath with the rule’s length so it returns to the same position each time.
Building the Caliper Section
Digital calipers and analog calipers need padded, individual storage to protect the measuring faces. A foam insert cut to fit the calipers precisely is the best solution. Cut a piece of 1-inch foam to fit the shelf section, then cut a relief (the caliper’s silhouette) into the foam. The caliper drops in with the jaws protected. Label each foam cutout with the tool name so any missing tool is immediately obvious.
Building the Gauge Section
Marking gauges and mortise gauges hang on individual pegs or in custom slots. A simple slot cut into a horizontal bar (a kerf that the gauge beam slides into) holds the gauge at the correct height with the head visible. Beams of different widths need different kerf widths – cut each slot to fit its specific gauge and don’t interchange them.

Should I store measuring tools open or closed?
Open is better for rules and gauges – closed containers hide the tools and require opening to find what you need. The organizer works because every tool is visible at a glance. Calipers are the exception – they need a closed case or foam protection to prevent jaw damage.
How do I protect steel rules from rust?
Wipe steel rules with a lightly oiled cloth (a few drops of oil on a rag, then buffed dry) after each shop session. The thin oil film prevents surface oxidation. Don’t use WD-40 – it attracts dust and eventually creates a grimy buildup. Camellia oil or sewing machine oil are better choices for precision tool surfaces.
