Build a Shooting Board for Perfect Square and Mitered Ends
A shooting board is a simple sled that holds a workpiece at a precise angle while you run a hand plane along its edge. For squaring end grain, it’s more accurate than a miter saw for short pieces and produces a surface that’s genuinely flat and truly square – which is essential for boxes, picture frames, and any project where square ends matter. How a Shooting Board Works
The shooting board has two levels. The lower level is a flat base that the plane rides along. Because the plane’s side is the guide (running along the side of the base), the cut is controlled by the plane’s geometry rather than your hand position – making it inherently more accurate than any freehand planing.
Building the Base
Start with a piece of 3/4-inch MDF or stable hardwood plywood, 12 inches wide and 24 to 30 inches long. This is the base. Attach a second piece of 3/4-inch material to the left half of the base (for a right-handed shooter) using glue and screws. The upper platform should be exactly 3/4 inch thick – the same thickness as the base piece – so when the plane rides in the channel between them, the plane’s blade sits at exactly the right height to cut at the platform’s surface.
Adding the Square Fence
The fence is the key to accuracy. It positions the workpiece perpendicular to the plane’s path. Attach the fence to the right end of the upper platform, perpendicular to the platform’s left edge (where the plane runs). Check the fence with a reliable square. Screw it from below so it’s removable for replacement when it wears. The fence face should be flat and smooth – sand it after installation if needed.
Testing and Using
Test with a piece of scrap: hold it against the fence and take a light pass with a sharp, well-set plane. Check the result with a square on multiple faces. If the end is truly square, the shooting board is correct. If not, shim the fence until it is. In use, push the plane along the base channel with the workpiece held firmly against the fence. Take thin passes – 1/64 inch per pass – for the most accurate results.
Building the 45-Degree Version
For mitering, attach the fence at 45 degrees to the plane’s path. The same base and platform design works; only the fence angle changes. A 45-degree fence for left-hand miters and a matching fence for right-hand miters (mounted at the opposite end of the shooting board, or on a separate board) handles frame corners completely. Cut miters slightly long on the miter saw, then trim to exact length on the shooting board.
