Build a Wrench and Plier Holder for the Wall
Wrenches and pliers belong on the wall, not in a drawer. In a drawer, you dig through the stack every time you need a 10mm. On the wall, you see every tool at once, grab the right one in under a second, and put it back without looking. This wall holder handles combination wrenches, open-end wrenches, pliers, locking pliers, and channel-lock pliers – everything in its own position, visible and accessible.
Design Options
Three common approaches: angled pegs for wrenches to hang from the ring end, horizontal rails for pliers to hang from the handle pivot, and magnetic strips for flat tools. A combination holder uses all three zones in one panel. This build covers a modular system that accommodates all common wrench and plier types.

Step 1: Plan for Your Tool Inventory
Count your wrenches by type: combination (metric and SAE), open-end, box-end, adjustable. Count pliers by type: slip-joint, needle-nose, lineman’s, channel-lock sizes. Measure the longest (usually the 18-inch channel-lock or the 3/4-inch combination wrench). Your holder must accommodate the longest tool in each category.
Step 2: Build the Wrench Section
Cut 1-inch dowel pieces to 4-inch lengths – one per wrench position. Drill angled holes in the back panel (angled down and forward at about 30 degrees) and glue the peg sections in. The pegs catch the ring of combination wrenches and the box end of box wrenches. Arrange pegs from smallest to largest wrench size, left to right.
Step 3: Build the Plier Rail
A horizontal 1/2-inch dowel works well for pliers – the pivot hole on most pliers fits over the dowel and the handles keep the plier angled. Mount the rail about 6 inches below the wrench section. Pliers hang with handles up, business end down – easy to grab by the handles.
Step 4: Add a Magnetic Strip Section
A commercial magnetic tool strip (12-24 inches) mounted below the dowel system holds flat tools that don’t hang well: putty knives, small screwdrivers, Allen wrenches. The magnet holds steel tools securely without any holes or hooks required.
Step 5: Mount the System
Mount the holder at eye level on the wall nearest your workbench. The entire system should be reachable without moving your feet from the typical working position. Lag screw into studs – a loaded wrench holder can weigh 20+ pounds.
FAQ
Should I organize metric and SAE wrenches separately?
Yes – keep metric and SAE sets on separate pegs or on different rows. Mixing them slows you down when you’re looking for a specific size. The most efficient arrangement is metric left, SAE right (or vice versa), sized small to large within each set.
