Greg is a woodworker who admits he was very good at making sawdust and very bad at managing the space he made it in. For twelve years, his two-car garage accumulated tools, materials, project scraps, hardware, and finished pieces in a slow geological accumulation that eventually made working in the shop feel like an archaeological excavation. Every project started with 20 minutes of finding tools. Every glue-up was a scramble for clamps. The shop worked against him, and he knew it, but reorganization always felt like a project that could happen after the current project finished. It never did.

The transformation was triggered, as it often is, by a shop injury. Not a serious one – a twist of the ankle on a piece of scrap he didn’t see on the floor – but enough to make him stop and look at the space with the eyes of someone who didn’t want a repeat. He spent the first weekend just documenting: every object in the shop photographed in place, then categorized on paper. Keep, donate, trash, and a fourth category he called “why do I have this.” That fourth category was, astonishingly, about 20% of the total shop contents.

The rebuild happened over four weekends. New storage systems: a proper lumber rack, a French cleat wall, a dedicated hardware cabinet with labeled bins, a rolling assembly table with clamp storage built into the sides. New habits: a 10-minute end-of-session tidy, tools back to their homes before the next task begins, scrap evaluated immediately rather than set down to be dealt with later.

Two years later, Greg doesn’t recognize the person who worked in the old shop. “I do better work now,” he says, “because I can find what I need and I can think clearly without the visual noise.” The shop isn’t just organized. It’s a place he actually wants to spend time. Tell us about the moment that triggered your shop transformation – we want to hear the before story, not just the after.
