How to Build a Marking Tool Station at the Workbench

Every woodworking project starts with layout – measuring, marking, and scribing the cut lines and joint positions that guide every subsequent operation. The marking tools for this work – marking gauge, mortise gauge, cutting gauge, wheel gauge, marking knife, pencils, chalk line – are the first tools you pick up on any project and need to be organized for instant access. A dedicated marking tool station at the bench end keeps all layout tools in one place, organized by type, and reliably returned to the same position after every use.

The Layout

The marking tool station occupies the right end of the workbench (for a right-handed woodworker) – the position where you’ll be standing when you pick up a gauge or knife for layout. A 12-by-24-inch panel mounts vertically on the wall at the bench end, with the tool organization split into three sections: measuring tools at the top (rules, squares, tape measures), scribing tools in the middle (gauges, knives, awls), and reference tools at the bottom (chalk line, straight edges).

Building the Gauge Section

Marking gauges hang on individual pegs – a 1/2-inch dowel glued at a slight upward angle into the panel, one per gauge. The gauge beam slides over the peg with the head visible. Mortise gauges, wheel gauges, and cutting gauges all hang this way. One peg per gauge, all at the same height for visual organization. Label each peg position with the gauge type.

The Knife and Awl Section

Marking knives and awls need individual holders – either a block of hardwood with drilled holes for blades to drop into, or a magnetic strip that holds metal-handled tools. The magnetic strip is cleaner and more versatile: any metal marking knife or awl hangs on it without a dedicated holder. Mount it at eye height so you can see the blade profiles and choose the right knife for the operation.

Pencil and Chalk Line

Pencils live in a small holder (a drilled hardwood block with one hole per pencil) at the near edge of the station where they’re the first thing reached for. Multiple sharpened pencils mean you’re not stopping mid-layout to find a working pencil. The chalk line hangs on a dedicated hook at the bottom of the station – it’s used less frequently but needs to be accessible without rummaging.

How many marking gauges should a woodworker own?

At minimum: one standard marking gauge, one mortise gauge (two pins for scribing both sides of a mortise simultaneously), and one cutting gauge with a blade rather than a pin (for scoring across the grain). These three cover essentially all layout operations in furniture making. A wheel gauge adds precision and is worth the addition if you do a lot of precise layout work.

What’s the best pencil for woodworking layout?

A mechanical pencil with 0.5mm leads for fine layout work, and a carpenter’s pencil for rough marks on lumber. The carpenter’s pencil produces a heavier line visible in poor light; the mechanical pencil produces lines fine enough to split with a knife for precision marking.
