How to Manage Sawdust in a Small Workshop
Sawdust is the unavoidable byproduct of woodworking, and in a small shop it accumulates faster than you’d expect. Fine dust settles on every surface, coats tools, clogs finishes, and – most importantly – is a respiratory hazard when inhaled. Managing sawdust in a small shop isn’t just about cleanliness; it’s about maintaining the health of your lungs and the quality of your finishes. Capture at the Source
The most effective dust management happens before the dust enters the air. Every stationary machine should have a dust collection connection – 4-inch hose from the machine’s dust port to a collector. For power tools used at the bench (router, sander, drill), a portable dust extractor connected directly to the tool captures 90 to 99 percent of dust before it becomes airborne. Ambient Air Filtration

Personal Protection

Disposable N95 respirators are adequate for occasional use but less comfortable and less effective than a fitted half-mask for extended sessions. Cleaning Practices
Never use compressed air to blow dust off surfaces in the shop – this puts settled dust back into the air and redistributes it everywhere. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to collect dust from surfaces. Sweep the floor last, after all surface dust has been vacuumed. Replace the shop vacuum filter regularly – a clogged filter dramatically reduces suction and passes fine dust back out through the exhaust.
