The conventional wisdom is that a proper shop needs a dust collector. For a shop with multiple stationary machines running simultaneously, this is true. For a small shop with one machine running at a time, a thoughtful alternative approach can get you to the same air quality result with less infrastructure and less expense. The most popular alternative: a single high-quality shop vac, strategically connected. A shop vac with a HEPA filter and a bucket separator (to extend filter life) can provide excellent dust capture at a single machine when connected directly to that machine’s dust port. The limitation is simultaneous capture – you can only collect from one machine at a time. The response: in a small shop with one machine running at a time (the only practical configuration anyway, given space constraints), this is sufficient.
