Sarah teaches high school English. Her summers are the season she builds. The rest of the year, she builds on weekends and occasional evenings – not as many hours as she’d like, but enough to maintain a practice she describes as “the thing that keeps me sane.” Her shop is a converted attached garage, 240 square feet, that she built out over three summers while teaching full time. The result is a weekend shop that punches well above its seasonal commitment.

The shop was designed for efficiency, because Sarah’s shop time is finite and she guards it carefully. Every decision about layout, storage, and equipment was made through the lens of “how much time does this cost per session?” Machines on mobile bases: yes, because the setup time is worth it for the floor space it returns. A French cleat wall: yes, because finding tools instantly is worth more than the build cost of the holders. A dedicated sharpening station right beside the bench: yes, because sharpening tools mid-session without leaving the bench zone means she stays in the flow of the work.

Her project list for the last three years: a Shaker-style dresser in figured maple, a dining table in white oak with breadboard ends, a set of six ladder-back chairs (still in progress – the chairs are the most time-intensive project she’s undertaken), a bookcase for her classroom, and a constantly refreshed collection of smaller pieces she gives as gifts. All of this from 240 square feet, evenings and weekends, for three years.

“My students sometimes ask what I do outside of school,” Sarah says. “I tell them I build furniture. They think it’s weird. I tell them it’s better than being at school thinking about school.” The shop is the counterweight. The furniture is the evidence. Tell us about your weekend or after-hours shop practice – the community of part-time builders is bigger than most people realize.
