Shop Tour: The Flooring Pro’s Cargo Van Shop

When your work takes you to job sites every day, the van is the shop. A flooring contractor who installs hardwood, engineered, and tile flooring spends zero time in a fixed workshop – every job is the shop, and the van has to carry everything needed to install flooring in any residential or commercial space, plus the cutting station for any type of material. This tour covers a completely outfitted cargo van shop organized for flooring installation: material storage, cutting station, tool storage, and the power system that makes it work.

The Van Configuration

A 144-inch wheelbase extended cargo van provides approximately 200 cubic feet of cargo space. One side of the van carries material storage: a rolling lumber/plank rack built from 80/20 aluminum extrusion that slides on van tracks, holding up to 20 bundles of flooring material on different shelves. The opposite side holds tools: organized storage for the table saw, the miter saw, the nail guns, the floor nailer, the hand tools, and the measurement equipment. The center of the van is the loading zone for the current job’s material.

The Cutting Station

A compact miter saw on a fold-down mount deploys inside the van for in-van cuts during setup, and a fold-out support on the van’s rear doors provides outfeed for long pieces. The table saw is a job-site saw on a rolling stand that deploys from the van’s side door when needed for rip cuts. For a flooring installer, the miter saw handles 90 percent of cuts; the table saw handles ripping planks for borders and transitions.

Power

The van runs a 2,000-watt pure-sine inverter powered from an auxiliary lithium battery bank. This provides 120V AC power at the van for tools and battery chargers without needing a generator or site power. The lithium bank recharges while driving. At sites with no power access, the van is self-sufficient for all cutting operations. At sites with power access, a shore power connection supplements the battery system and recharges it.

Organization Principles

Every tool has a dedicated location, marked with a silhouette on the van’s wall. At the end of each job, every tool returns to its marked position before the van is loaded with material. The silhouette system means any missing tool is immediately visible – the empty silhouette shows a gap. For a van that goes to multiple job sites per week, this organization prevents left-behind tools and dramatically reduces the time spent finding equipment at the start of each job.

Key Lessons

  • The silhouette marking system was adopted after losing a $300 oscillating tool at a job site. The cost of implementing the system – a few hours with a marker and some time at the end of each day for verification – is trivial compared to losing tools.
  • The auxiliary battery bank paid for itself in the first month by eliminating generator rental at sites without power. A generator would also be a separate piece of equipment to load, unload, and maintain.
  • The fold-down miter saw mount was a custom fabrication. Nothing commercial fit the exact van dimensions. Building it to specification was a one-weekend project that made the cutting station permanently stable.

How do you handle large material delivery when the van is already loaded?

Material for the current job is ordered to the job site, not transported in the van. The van carries tools and backup material only. Job site deliveries from the flooring supplier arrive directly, eliminating the van as a material transport vehicle for large orders.
