Shop Tour: The Green Woodworking Shop – No Electricity Required
This 12×16 foot shop runs entirely without electricity. The power source is the woodworker’s own body – and specifically, the green (freshly cut) wood that yields to edge tools in ways dry wood does not. A shaving horse, a pole lathe, a froe, a drawknife, and a handful of hand tools produce Windsor chairs, spoons, bowls, and ladderback chairs of extraordinary quality. The Shaving Horse
The shaving horse is the green woodworker’s primary workholding device. It looks like a low bench with a foot-pedal jaw mechanism. You sit astride the horse, push the pedal down, and the jaw clamps the work. Release the pedal and the jaw opens. The drawknife removes material in long, controlled strokes with both hands free for guiding the cut. Learning the shaving horse takes one afternoon. Using it for a year makes it feel essential.
The Pole Lathe
A pole lathe turns wood using a foot treadle connected to the work through a cord wrapped around the spindle. The work spins in one direction when you push the treadle down, cuts happen on the downstroke, and the work spins back when you lift your foot. It’s slower than an electric lathe and requires different technique – the tool cuts only on the downstroke. The result is spindles and chair legs of excellent quality, worked from green stock that would crack if dried before turning.
Green Wood Sourcing
This shop runs on wood cut from the owner’s property and from the municipality’s tree service. Urban tree services often have free chips and sections – call local contractors in the spring when storm cleanup produces the most material. The green woodworker’s material cost is near zero. The processing time – splitting to billets with a froe, cutting to rough sizes – is the investment. Green wood must be used within weeks of cutting; it dries and becomes harder than iron very quickly.
Species That Work Green
Ash splits cleanly and bends reliably. Oak is traditional for Windsor chair legs and arms. White oak makes excellent bent parts. Cherry and maple turn beautifully on the pole lathe. Avoid pine and other softwoods for structural chair parts – they lack the long fibers that give a turned spindle its strength. The species rules in green woodworking are different from dry wood work.
What a Green Woodworker Builds
Windsor chairs are the great achievement of the craft – dozens of turned spindles, bent backrests, shaped seats, and compound-angle joinery, all assembled from green parts that dry and lock tight after assembly. Spoons and spatulas come from carved green billets split from a small log. Bowls from green wood turn thin and warp into organic oval shapes as they dry – beautiful, functional, impossible to replicate with dry stock.

Electricity is a convenience, not a requirement. The constraint of green woodworking forces you to understand wood at a fundamental level – grain direction, fiber structure, moisture content, species behavior.
