The modern maker shop has expanded beyond the traditional woodworking toolkit. In Alex’s 600-square-foot shop, the largest machine is a 4×8-foot CNC router table. The second largest is a 130-watt CO2 laser cutter. The workbench is still present, the hand tools are still there, but the primary production tools are digital-to-material: CAD files become cut parts without a hand measuring or marking anything. The shop’s aesthetic is part traditional workshop, part digital fabrication lab, and it produces work that couldn’t be made any other way.
The CNC router handles structural cutting: cabinet parts, furniture components, complex joinery that would be impractical to cut by hand or with a router freehand. Alex designs in Fusion 360, generates toolpaths in Carbide Create Pro, and runs parts while working on assembly at the bench in the corner. The machine runs largely unattended – he’s learned the feed rates and bit choices that allow reliable unattended operation, and he monitors from the bench rather than standing over the machine for every cut.
The laser handles surface decoration, signage, engraving, and cutting thin materials (1/4-inch plywood, acrylic, leather) that the CNC router handles less cleanly. The combination of the two machines means that virtually any flat-material fabrication need in the shop can be handled digitally, at any level of complexity, in a reproducible way. Alex makes custom furniture, architectural millwork, and commercial signage from the same shop using the same toolkit.
The traditional tools haven’t disappeared – they’ve changed roles. Hand planes are for final surfacing of CNC-cut panels. Chisels are for fitting joints that the CNC cut to 95% of final dimension. Hand saws are for quick one-off cuts that aren’t worth programming. The digital and the hand-tool work coexist as two phases of the same production process.
