Shop Tour: The Metalworking and Welding Shop

Most woodworking shops have a grinder and a drill, but this 24×30 foot shop goes fully into metal. The owner is a furniture designer who works in steel and wood – dining tables with welded steel bases and solid walnut tops, steel shelving with wooden shelves, steel and wood benches for residential and commercial clients. The shop holds both disciplines under one roof, which requires a strict division between the two processes and some creative thinking about fire safety.

The Division of Space

Wood and metal work cannot share the same physical space when welding is active. Metal sparks travel 20 feet and ignite wood shavings instantly. This shop divides the 24×30 space into two zones with a rolling steel partition on track – the woodworking zone occupies two-thirds of the shop, and the metalworking zone occupies one-third. When welding, the partition rolls closed, wood dust is settled and swept, and the welding zone is fully separated.

The Metalworking Equipment

A MIG welder handles most structural work – rectangular steel tubing, plate, and angle iron. A TIG welder handles finish welds where appearance matters. A plasma cutter replaces the angle grinder for most cut operations – faster, cleaner, and more controllable. A metal-cutting bandsaw handles all straight cuts in flat stock and tubing. A bench grinder with a wire wheel handles rust removal and weld prep.

Ventilation for Welding

Welding fumes are a serious health hazard – the particles are ultrafine and the gases include ozone, nitrogen oxide, and metal oxide vapors depending on the base metal and filler. This shop has a dedicated welding fume extractor – a 3/4-HP unit with a 3-foot suction arm positioned at the weld – and a large exhaust fan in the metalworking wall. The shop door stays open during welding. A CO detector and a CO2 detector are mounted at head height in the metalworking zone.

Fire Suppression

Four CO2 fire extinguishers – one in each corner of the metalworking zone. A fifth in the woodworking zone. Before welding, the woodworking zone is swept clean and wetted. All flammable materials are removed or covered with welding blankets. A fire watch is maintained for 30 minutes after any welding session – welding sparks can smolder in crevices for 20 minutes or more before igniting.

What We Can Learn from This Shop

Adding a second discipline to a shop requires more than adding the tools – it requires thinking through the interaction between the disciplines and building in the safety systems to manage it. The woodworker-welder who adds welding without thinking through fire prevention and ventilation creates a serious hazard. Do the safety work before running the first bead.
