Shop Tour: The Off-Grid Workshop – Solar-Powered and Self-Sufficient

This 20×24 foot shop in a rural area draws its power entirely from a 3.2 kW solar array and a lithium battery bank. No utility connection, no electricity bill, no power company involvement. The woodworker runs a table saw, a jointer, a planer, a bandsaw, a dust collector, and all standard hand tools from this system. The shop has been off-grid for four years. This tour explains the electrical system, the constraints it creates, and how the woodworker works within them.

The Solar System

Eight 400-watt panels on the shop roof feed a 48-volt MPPT charge controller and a 20 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery bank. A 5 kW continuous (10 kW peak) pure sine wave inverter provides 240-volt power for the table saw and 120-volt power for everything else. The battery bank stores enough energy for a full day of moderate shop use, and the solar array recharges it by noon on a sunny day in the summer months.

Managing Peak Loads

A table saw starting under load draws 30 to 50 amps at 120 volts for the first second. The battery bank handles this peak without issue. The constraint is running high-draw tools simultaneously. The shop rule: only one large tool (table saw, jointer, planer) runs at a time. The dust collector runs continuously with any machine, which is fine since it draws only 8 amps. This constraint turns out to be a good practice anyway – most woodworkers should not be running two major tools at once from a safety standpoint either.

Winter Operation

Winter is the challenge for any solar system at northern latitudes. Short days and low sun angles reduce generation significantly. The shop uses a 2,000-watt propane generator as a backup during extended overcast periods in winter – typically 5 to 10 hours of generator use per month from November through February. The rest of the year, solar handles everything.

The Shop Layout

The electrical panel is mounted on the wall nearest the inverter, which sits in a ventilated enclosure on an exterior wall. All circuits run in conduit, properly fused. The system is permitted and inspected – the local authority treated it as a standard off-grid installation. A 240-volt circuit runs the table saw; four 20-amp circuits handle the rest of the shop. One circuit is dedicated to battery charging for cordless tools.

Energy awareness changes how you use tools. Knowing that each cut costs real energy from a finite daily budget makes you more deliberate about machine time. This woodworker mills lumber more efficiently, plans cuts before turning on the saw, and wastes less material as a result of thinking about the full production sequence before starting the machine.
