Shop Tour: The Tiny Shop Under 100 Square Feet
This is a shop of 96 square feet – a converted 8×12 storage shed. It holds a workbench, a thickness planer, a scroll saw, a small drill press, and enough storage for a serious hobbyist. The owner makes small furniture, boxes, and decorative pieces. Everything works. Nothing is comfortable. Every session requires a brief setup – moving one tool to reach another – and every session ends with a full teardown to leave a clear path through. This tour shows how small a shop can actually be while still producing real work.
The Shed Conversion
The 8×12 shed was a standard hardware store kit – oriented strand board sheathing, no insulation, no electrical. The conversion involved: running a dedicated 20-amp circuit from the house, insulating the walls and ceiling with 2-inch rigid foam, adding a vapor barrier, covering the interior with 1/2-inch plywood, and installing an LED shop light and a small wall heater. The conversion took one weekend and cost $600 in materials.
The Bench and Storage System
A 24×60 inch workbench occupies the entire left wall. The bench is solid – built-in, braced to the studs, not going anywhere. A French cleat wall above the bench holds every hand tool. Below the bench, three drawers and one open shelf hold clamps, finishing supplies, and accessories. The bench is the shop – everything else in the 96 square feet is either a machine or a path to the machine.
The Machine Strategy
Only machines that cannot be replicated by hand tools are in this shop. A thickness planer (because dimensioning lumber by hand in a small space is exhausting), a scroll saw (because a coping saw is not a practical substitute for intricate curves), and a drill press (because perpendicular holes are otherwise difficult without a bench reference). A table saw does not fit and is not missed – a circular saw with a guide does 90 percent of what a table saw would do in this shop’s projects.
Dust in 96 Square Feet
Dust is the biggest challenge in a tiny enclosed shop. A small wall-mounted dust collector with a 1-micron bag runs anytime a machine runs. A HEPA shop vac handles everything else. After every session, the shop vac runs for 5 minutes with the shop sealed. The air quality is better than in many larger shops because the discipline is non-negotiable in a space this size.
What Works, What Doesn’t
What works: hand tool work, small furniture, boxes, decorative pieces, and any project where size allows comfortable movement in the space. What doesn’t work: sheet goods (a 4×8 panel cannot fit inside the shop to be cut), large furniture, glue-ups longer than 36 inches, and any project requiring multiple machines in sequence. The owner knows this and designs projects to the shop’s constraints. The constraint is also the creative driver.
What We Can Learn from This Shop
A shop doesn’t need to be large to be real. The 96-square-foot shop produces finished work of quality equal to shops ten times its size. The discipline of constraint – knowing exactly what the space can and cannot do, and designing within it – is a skill that transfers to any shop. You learn more about your tools and your working style in a small shop than you ever do in a large one.
