After five years of planning, saving, and building in stages, this 600-square-foot converted two-car garage is everything the owner set out to create. Every machine has a dedicated circuit and a dedicated location. Every tool has a home. The floor is painted epoxy, the walls are fully sheet-rocked and primed, the lighting is better than most professional shops, and the dust collection system reaches every machine through a network of 4-inch PVC trunk lines. This is the shop build that many plan for and few complete – here’s the full tour.

The Build Process

Year 1 was infrastructure: the electrical subpanel (150 amps), the 4-inch concrete floor patch and epoxy coating, the spray foam insulation, and the ceiling drywall. Year 2 was organization: the French cleat walls, the workbench (built over two weeks of evenings), the lumber rack, and the overhead lighting (12 LED shop lights in three rows). Year 3 was machines: the SawStop table saw, the 8-inch jointer, the 15-inch planer. Year 4 was refinement: the dust collection trunk line, the band saw, the drill press, and the dedicated sharpening station. Year 5 was final finishing: the spray booth, the climate control system, and the wall graphics.

The Layout

The table saw sits in the center of the 600-square-foot space with 8 feet of clear outfeed room and 6 feet of rip capacity. The jointer and planer share a corner, positioned so infeed from the jointer leads directly to the planer. The workbench runs the full 24-foot length of one long wall. The miter saw station occupies one short wall with 10-foot support wings. The French cleat panels fill the remaining wall sections. The floor has a clear traffic lane between every machine pair.

The Systems

Dust collection: a 3-horsepower cyclone collector outside the building with 6-inch main trunk lines in through the wall, dropping to 4-inch at each machine. Every machine has its own blast gate. Electrical: dedicated 240V circuits for the table saw (30A), jointer (20A), planer (20A), and dust collector (20A). Multiple 20A 120V circuits throughout. Climate: a mini-split heat pump handles both heating and cooling, keeping the shop at 65 to 70 degrees year-round. The result is a shop that works as well in January as in July.

Key Lessons from the Build

  • Stage the build. Doing everything at once would have required an $80,000 budget that wasn’t available. Doing it in stages over five years cost about $35,000 total and let each stage inform the next.
  • Infrastructure first. The floor, the electrical, and the climate control were done in year 1, before any machines. Every machine decision that came later was better because the infrastructure was already right.
  • The epoxy floor was worth every penny. It looks professional, it’s easy to clean, and it reflects light upward – the shop is noticeably brighter than before the floor was coated.
