This tour covers a 12×20-foot garage shop that does it all: furniture making, cabinet work, holiday gifts, shop builds, and home repair projects. After seven years of refinement, it’s a tight, efficient space with clear solutions to the constraints that most one-car garage shops struggle with.
The Space and Setup
The garage is 12 wide by 20 feet deep with an 8-foot ceiling. A 200-amp subpanel serves the shop with four circuits: two 20-amp 120V for lighting and bench tools, one 240V 30-amp for the table saw, and one 240V 20-amp for the dust collector. All four walls have French cleats from 24 inches above the floor to the ceiling – the entire perimeter is usable storage.
Zone Layout
The table saw occupies the center-left position, with the workbench against the back wall directly behind it – the bench serves as the table saw outfeed table. The miter saw station is against the left wall on a fold-out mount with wing extensions. The right wall holds the French cleat storage system with all hand tools, clamps, and accessories. The right front corner holds the rolling dust collector and the air compressor on a shared mobile base.
The Clever Solutions
The garage door opening extends the effective working space to the driveway when it’s open. Sheet goods enter on a low cart that slides under the miter saw station during storage. The table saw has a zero-clearance insert and a riving knife – safety features that also improve cut quality. The floor has a painted-concrete finish with lines marking machine operating zones – a visual reminder of where each machine’s safety clearance extends.
What Gets Used Daily
The table saw and workbench see use in every session. The miter saw is second. Hand tools (chisels, planes, marking tools) come off the cleat wall for nearly every project. The drill press, router table, and band saw are monthly tools – important to have, but not daily drivers.

How do you handle 8-foot lumber in this space?
Long stock enters and exits through the garage door with the saw positioned near the door. Infeed is through the door; the board extends into the driveway. For anything longer than 10 feet, the saw gets rolled to within 4 feet of the door opening and the board feeds from outside. It takes 2 minutes to reposition the saw for long stock – not ideal but entirely workable.
