Sometimes one small build changes how you think about your entire shop. For woodworker and furniture maker Tom, it was a chisel rack. He spent an afternoon building a simple wall-mounted rack – eight slots angled at 15 degrees, spaced 1-1/2 inches apart, holding his bench chisels bevel-up so he could see the profiles at a glance. The build used a piece of 4/4 cherry he had in the scrap bin and took about two hours including finishing.

The result was so satisfying – eight chisels in eight dedicated spots, visible, accessible, always returned to the same place – that he looked at the rest of his shop and saw nothing but missed opportunities for the same thinking. The chisels had a home. Why didn’t everything else? Over the next three months, he built holders for every hand tool in his shop using the same approach: a dedicated holder, sized exactly to the tool, angled or oriented for the most natural retrieval motion, built from shop scraps.

The full inventory: eight chisel slots, six plane shelves (angled, sole-down), four saw tills (angled, teeth-protected), a marking gauge bar, a mallet hook, divider pockets, and a scratch stock holder he built because he uses scratch stocks more than any book on hand-tool work would suggest is typical. Every holder was built to fit exactly one tool in exactly one orientation. No improvisation, no compromise.

“The shop I have now is the shop I wanted when I started,” Tom says. “I just didn’t know how to get there. It turns out you get there one small build at a time.” The chisel rack was the first small build. The rest followed naturally. What one small storage build changed your shop the most?
